How To Manage Your Pond

Having a pond on your property can make for a beautiful aesthetically pleasing place to relax and find serenity. Add in fish and you’ve established a vibrant ecosystem that serves a number of needs. Maintaining the vibrancy of the pond requires some work, however, because taking a hands-off approach will result in a natural pond but not a visually pleasing one. There is no step by step guide to maintaining your pond, but there is a number of things that you can do to keep it healthy.

Take Care Of The Banks Around The Pond

One of the first things to be aware of with relation to pond maintenance is the state of the bank around the pond. Erosion of the banks can lead to run off that adversely affects water quality by introducing sod and other material into the pond. Making sure that the banks have sufficient tree and grass growth can help prevent this. You may also want to control runoff with diversion ditches, embankments, and other means.

Install An Aerator

Ponds, especially small ones, often have issues and suffer from oxygen depletion. This can lead to algae growth, foul smell, and the death of fish in the pond. Installing an aerator helps to replenish the oxygen of the pond. You may also want to add a fountain to work in conjunction with the aerator as it also helps oxygenate the water, if only to a lesser degree.

Control Weeds And Algae

Weeds and algae can and will be detrimental to your ideal pond if they are left to run rampant and unchecked. You will definitely want to have a system for algae and aquatic weed removal in place. There a number of things that help control algae and aquatic weed growth. These include making sure pond depth stays between 3 to 6 feet, pulling rooted plants that are an issue, and keeping livestock and fertilizer away from the watershed.

A healthy pond is a good place to relax, fish, and get back to nature. It can be a thing of beauty that attracts all types of wildlife. Just remember that it will take some time and effort on your part to maintain and keep it looking the way you want it to.
